Unite said it had struck a deal with Elgin-based McPherson to increase the basic pay of its drivers by more than 20% over the next two years.

It means more than 300 drivers will see their pay packets boosted by a minimum of £2,200 this year.

The company, which moves goods all over Scotland and holds international licences for more than 250 HGVs, agreed with the trade union to a 9.4% increase on pay for 2022 and a further 10.01% increase in 2023.

Unite said it had also secured improvements to a number of working benefits, such as overtime rates, which will rise by 15.5% this year and 12.4% in 2023.

New vehicles used for distance work will also be installed with microwaves and fridges.

Unite industrial officer Marc Jackson said: “Unite is delighted to secure such a great deal across the board for our members at McPherson’s.

“We have also doubled our shop stewards who have done a great job negotiating with the company.

“The deal provides a fantastic springboard for the future, and it will help retain and attract people to the industry.”

McPherson is a third generation family-owned haulier specialising in the transportation of bulk spirits.
