Scania is launching Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) with GVWs of up to 36 tonnes.

At the heart of both trucks is a newly developed GE281 Gearbox Electric machine, which incorporates a pair of electric motors and a 6-speed gearbox, and works in tandem with either its 7- or 9-litre diesel engines. It offers 230kW continuously, 290kW as peak power output, and has a maximum torque of 2,100Nm.

The PHEV has an installed battery capacity of 90kWh (3 x 30kWh batteries), while the HEV version has one 30kWh battery. The PHEV can be fully charged in 35 minutes when using a 95kW DC charger.

Available in P, G and L series cabs, they have an electric range of up to 60km, and are claimed to offer fuel savings of up to 40% in urban areas compared with conventional diesel trucks.

Fredrik Allard, senior vice president and head of e-mobility at Scania sales and marketing, said: “The GE281 is something brand new in the heavy truck industry. With this fourth generation of hybrid trucks from Scania, we have reached a point where hybrids are strong candidates for a variety of applications and operations where sustainability and smart solutions are the main priorities.

“We do believe that these kinds of trucks will eventually be replaced by battery-electric vehicles. But until long electric-powered ranges and relevant charging infrastructures are available in all markets, there is definitely a window during this decade for hybrids.”
