UPS has officially opened its expanded East Midlands Airport (EMA) hub which has more than doubled the packages it can sort to 22,500 parcels an hour.

The delivery company said the expansion of the hub is aimed at helping UK exporters scale up more easily during peak periods and is part of a wider strategy to target regional small and medium-sized businesses looking to export.

The 36,000 sq m distribution centre, which cost £138m, and features automated scanning and sortation systems, can link exporters with six daily flights to key markets, including Germany and the U.S.

Jim O’Gara, president of UPS UK Ireland and Nordics, said: “Our investment at East Midlands Airport shows our confidence that UK businesses of all sizes are poised to make the most of export opportunities now and in the future.

“Our message to companies large and small in the region is that the world is at their fingertips, and we’re here to make doing business internationally as easy as doing business at home."
