Royal Mail is significantly boosting the number of electric vehicles it operates across its UK fleet, with the addition of 3,000 low emission vans.
The company said it was also introducing charging points at all the delivery offices set to receive the vehicles, with the roll-out concentrating on ultra-low emission zones and green cities.
The parcel and mail carrier said the vehicles are designed to help its staff deliver letters and parcels in a secure and environmentally-friendly way. Load capacities range from 3.7 cu m to 6.3 cu m.
The addition of this latest tranche of EVs brings the total number it is operating to 3,300.
Simon Thompson, Royal Mail CEO, said: “Due to our feet on the street delivery model, we are the clear leader in low emissions per parcel in the UK.
“Electrification of our vehicle fleet will strengthen our advantage. That’s good for our customers, our people and the planet.”
The fleet additions follow Royal Mail’s recent launch of 29 low emission, gas-powered 40-tonne trucks, which emit approximately 84% less CO2 than a typical diesel-fuelled HGV.
