Thermo King has approved the use of fossil-free hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as a sustainable alternative to traditional diesel to power its refrigeration units.
It said that following thorough tests, the HVO biodiesel showed no effect on its units’ performance, even in freezing temperatures.
It added that HVO use leads to a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and particulate matter pollution from the engine.

Thermo King said the HVO biodiesel can be used as a drop-in replacement or mixed with regular diesel, with no requirements for modifications or more frequent maintenance intervals.
Francesco Incalza, president of Thermo King Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “We keep innovating to reduce the environmental footprint of our products, and by testing and validating the use of HVO in our units give our customers another option to increase the sustainability of their operations.”
