John Parry (2)

John Parry (pictured), Society of Operations Engineers (SOE) fellow and former IRTE director, has died at the age of 76.

Most recently chair of the IRTEC steering group and SOE board member, Parry was a major influence on the SOE’s industry standard irtec initiative by instigating its relaunch in 2011.

It gave technicians recognition for their capabilities and changed the face of vehicle maintenance.

Parry had also been an IRTE Services board member.

In 2006, he won Motor Transport’s Service to Industry award and was inducted into the Hall of Fame, for individuals who have created a lasting legacy by upholding the highest standards and traditions in the industry.

Parry enjoyed a long and distinguished career in road transport.

He was an engineering director at Exel and Exel Logistics from 1985-2006, overseeing one of the biggest fleets in the UK with 8,000 vehicles and 12,000 trailers.

In 2004, he started his own consultancy, JSP Consulting, to work for clients on transport legislation and compliance.

Mick Sweetmore, SOE president, said: “John always held a common sense, theoretical approach to his profession and was always available for help and advice for anyone who asked.

“He was instrumental in the success of irtec and was heavily involved in the steering group even in his retirement.

“John was one of the leading figures in road transport and was very well known, highly respected and an instantly recognisable, well-humoured man who will be sadly missed.”
