Abnormal load specialist Collett & Sons has transported a 160-tonne turbine and a 120-tonne generator from the Port of Tilbury to a sustainable waste processing site in Bedfordshire.
Preparation for the 78-mile journey began last December when the company worked with project partner Karl Gross to manage the UK leg of the load's trip to the Rookery South Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) in Stewartby.
Collett, winner of the Team of the Year Award in the 2019 MT Awards, relied on its 70m long Scheuerle 550 girder bridge - one of the longest in the UK - and secondary modular platform for the challenging journey, with the movement facilitated by Essex police.
The Rookery ERF will have the capacity to sustainably dispose of 545,000 tonnes of residual waste and will generate over 60 megawatts of low carbon electricity each year.
