A radar-based navigation system for HGVs that can operate anywhere and in any weather condition is set for release this year.

The radar, vision and laser system has been developed by Navtech and autonomous vehicle software firm Oxbotica and can be used in both on-road and off-road environments, including quarries, mines and ports.

The firms said it is not reliant on external infrastructure and can operate on its own or be fused with other location services driven by GPS, lidar or laser vision.

Phil Avery, Navtech CEO said: “Despite the potential of radar very few companies have successfully developed the necessary algorithms to use it properly.

“Oxbotica are world leaders in this area and together with our high performance radar sensors we believe the resulting system will deliver a step change in the performance available for all weather, all environment localisation and perception.

“This is crucial for automation in more challenging environments such as mines and ports.”

An Oxbotica spokeswoman confirmed that the system will be available for HGVs and could be used in any vehicle and any environment.
