Fowler Welch has secured a new contract with Wensleydale Creamery, makers of Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese. Fowler Welch will provide the cheesemaker with bulk storage for its maturing cheese, as well as distribution services between two of its manufacturing sites in Hawes and near Ripon, North Yorkshire. Fowler Welch’s move into ambient distribution alongside its chilled business is already paying dividends as MD Nick Hay tells Steve Hobson Although Nick Hay – MD of Fowler Welch since November 2010 – has, like the firm he runs, a background in chilled distribution, he sees ambient markets as far more happy hunting grounds. As Stobart’s withdrawal from the chilled market demonstrates, this has become a price-led commodity business where operators struggle to make money.
A combination of improved productivity and reconfigured warehousing space helped Fowler Welch improve its profit margin in the six months ending 30 September. While parent Dart Group did not break down the profit performance of its transport and distribution arm, it did reveal that turnover for the period rose 8% year-on-year to £80.3m (2011 H1: £74.2m).
