The audience of 1,200 industry professionals at the 2019 Microlise transport conference voted new technology as the biggest opportunity for the road transport industry.

The post-conference report also reveals that delegates believe the skills shortage is by far the biggest challenge facing the industry. One thing employers are doing is looking to recruit more ethnic minorities - almost half of delegates had recruited a black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) driver in the past 12 months.

Other key findings were that while most operators believe electric long haul trucks are more than 10 years away a sizeable minority expects to see them on the roads within seven years and almost half of delegates believed the government was not managing the roll out of clean air zones.
