Cleaner lorries can now receive a 10% reduction in the HGV road user levy. From 1 February, haulage firms operating Euro-6 vehicles can receive a discount on the levy following an announcement by the roads minister last year. The Unite union has called on the government to ringfence money raised from foreign truck operators by the HGV Road User Levy for investment in the UK’s transport infrastructure.
The HGV Road User Levy has smashed its initial £20m revenue target in its first year of operation, generating £44m in revenue from foreign-registered hauliers and prompting calls for the money to be reinvested in UK road freight.
The HGV Road User Levy has been labelled an “abject failure” by the chairman of Baxter Freight, who said it has done nothing to address the cost imbalance between UK operators and their continental counterparts.
