Scottish haulier McPherson has taken delivery of the UK’s first pair of Volvo FM liquefied natural gas (LNG) tractor units.
The Arbelour-based firm, which specialises in transporting bulk spirits, will initially be using the new gas trucks to carry distillery by-products to Scotland’s central belt.
Both trucks are equipped to full ADR specifications to also enable them to transport bulk spirit movements.
The 6x2 pusher axle Lite tractor units are powered by Volvo’s G13C enfines, with I-Shift automated 12-speed gearboxes.

Before the new LNG trucks were used in the operation, McPherson carried out full driver training and familiarisation of the new technology and refuelling methods, which was received positively.
“The drivers love the new FM LNGs and many more of our driving team are keen to try the trucks,” said McPherson MD Martin Brown.
“Refuelling is generally quicker than a conventional diesel truck and the operating range will permit us to get in return trips to Scotland’s central belt,” he said
The trucks are being double-shifted, seven days a week in the operation, he added.
“Our company ethos is to constantly push the technology boundaries to offer McPherson customers the very latest sustainable logistics solutions. The FM LNG vehicles fit that aim,” said Brown.
Both vehicles were supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North and Scotland and are covered by a four-year service contract, which will be carried out at either Aberdeen or Inverness dealerships.
McPherson runs a fleet of 220 vehicles and 700 trailers, and also runs an engineering service and haulage training division.
