Suttons Group is spending more than £6m on new tractor units– the first in the UK road tanker fleet to feature the company’s new branding. The company is purchasing around 70 new Volvo FMs with Globetrotter XL cabs as part of a replacement strategy to upgrade the existing vehicles, along with new tanker barrels and isotanks. Andrew Palmer, MD at Motor Transport Award-winning Suttons Group, is to retire at the end of April. John Sutton, who currently manages the group’s international division, will take on Palmer’s responsibilities as group MD from 1 May. Palmer (pictured second from right with Christine Bond of Mexichem Fluor) will step down from his full-time executive role on 30 April, but will join parent company Thomas Cradley Holdings’ (TCH) board as non-executive director in May. Abbey Logistics has hired the former MD of Suttons Group ahead of the start of its major new contract with British Sugar.
Widnes-based tanker specialist Suttons was founded by Alf Sutton in 1926 and remains family-owned. The founder’s grandson John Sutton was appointed CEO of Suttons Group in 2013 and the Sutton family still form the majority of the Suttons Group board. Suttons Group has two operating divisions: Road Tankers, headed by MD Michael Cundy; and Suttons International, where Barry McNally is MD.
