Dr Martin Read CBE has been appointed chairman of Wincanton with effect from 1 August. Read is currently chairman of two government owned companies – the Low Carbon Contracts Company and the Electricity Settlements Company – as well as the Remuneration Consultants Group and the UK Government Senior Salaries Review Body. Planned strike action by Wincanton drivers working for Argos has been cancelled after successful talks between the operator and Unite.
Wincanton has reversed heavy losses and is “back on track” – despite a 9.6% fall in turnover – after a turbulent two years that saw it sell its loss-making European activities and exit a poor performing market in the UK.
Plymouth-based Global Garden Products (GGP) has extended its contract with Wincanton, which will take the partnership to a decade. Wincanton has provided warehousing and distribution for the manufacturer’s powered garden products since 2003, delivering to the main B&Q DCs, and direct to GGP retailers nationwide. The contract is run from Wincanton’s Rothwell depot in Leeds.
