Kuehne + Nagel is to open a 195,000 ft² warehouse near Castle Donington in the East Midlands.

The company has signed a 15-year lease on the facility, which is being constructed on 17.6 acres at Segro Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway, and is due to open in March 2019.

Three existing facilities, including one at Minworth, will be merged into the new operation which will serve Kuehne + Nagel’s overland business.

Jim Hedderwick, overland director for Kuehne + Nagel UK said: “The new facility will enable us to continue to develop our market-leading European groupage product and will be designed to include a 40,000 ft2 temperature-controlled area to accelerate our ambitious growth plans in the pharmaceutical sector.”

East Midlands Gateway is adjacent to East Midlands Airport between junctions 23A and 24 of the M1, 13 miles from Nottingham and 14 miles from Derby.

The 700 acre site, which will include a 50-acre rail freight terminal, was launched in October 2017 and could accommodate 6 million ft².

It has already attracted Amazon which is taking 1.3 million ft² of space, Shop Direct which is taking 550,000 ft2 and a major transport and logistics operator, thought to be XPO Logistics to service a contract with Nestlé, which is taking 638,000 ft².

Segro’s chief operating officer Andy Gulliford commented: “Securing major international customers who are committed to establishing such significant operations on site represents an enormous vote of confidence for the scheme, the East Midlands region and the UK.”
