Scania's 13-litre gas engine rated up to 410hp will be available in a 6x2 tractor at some point. The high output engine can currently only be fitted under a G or R-series rigid or 4x2 tractor cab.
Running on CNG or LNG it offers up to 15% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 90% reduction when burning biomethane compared with Euro-6 diesel. Depending on the fuel tanks used, range can be up to 1,000 km.
The new urban friendly L-series will not initially be available with Scania's new lightweight 7-litre engine. Its 9-litre power plant is however available in a quiet low emission natural gas format. The 7-litre engine can be specified in the new P-series which Scania expects to account for half its sales volume in the urban sector.
The 7-litre engine offers a 3% fuel savings on the 9-litre power plant and is 360kg lighter. A gas version is under development.
Scania is working with battery manufacturer Northvolt on improved battery technology but could not say when a full electric truck would be available. A diesel electric prototype shown last year has not made it into production so for the time being it is pushing biodiesel and biomethane as its low emissions options.
It is also looking at hydrogen and has supplied 10 hydrogen prototypes to Norwegian operator ASKO.
