Yusen Logistics UK has been awarded a contract with Seiko UK, after the watch-maker moved to outsource its entire warehousing operation. Seiko brands include Pulsar and Lorus watches, as well as Seiko & Lorus Clocks. The move, which took effect this month, sees Yusen managing all inbound, storage, picking and value-added activities from Seiko’s Maidenhead, Berkshire site, where it has been based since 1985. Japanese-owned Yusen Logistics UK saw pre-tax profits leap in its latest financial year helped by a new healthcare deal and rising demand for warehousing as healthcare clients stockpiled ahead of Brexit.
Yusen Logistics is to spend some £9m upgrading its fleet and IT systems after merging its road transport operations with its air and sea freight forwarding businesses last year. Some £7m will be spent on a combination of vehicles and mechanical handling equipment as well as trailers including pillar-less tri-axles with sliding suzies, and its Department for Transport allocation of five 15.65m trailers.
