TfL public transport director Gareth Powell has been appointed as the MD of surface transport.
In his new role Powell, who replaces Leon Daniels, will take charge of TfL’s road network and oversee the delivery of London’s cycle lane roll out. His other responsibilities will include TfL’s bus and tram services and the regulation of taxis and private hire operators,
Powell joined TfL in 2003 from design, engineering and project management consultancy Atkins. After holding a number of roles in TfL’s business planning and performance division he moved to London Underground as strategy and service development director before taking on the role of TfL public transport and strategy director.
London’s transport commissioner Mike Brown said Powell “will bring great drive, energy and experience to the vital work of delivering the Mayor’s transport strategy and making London a safer, greener, fairer and more accessible place”.
Brown also gave his best wishes to the departing Leon Daniels. “Leon has made a massive contribution to TfL and London. Our progress under his leadership has been considerable and I am very grateful to him both personally and professionally for all his invaluable hard work and support,” he added.
Powell takes up his new role with immediate effect.
