Hargreaves Services is to “ration” expenditure in its logistics division after it suffered a 91% fall in operating profit last year due to competitive pressure. Operating profit plunged from £1.2m to £100,000 in the year to 31 May 2017, as turnover dropped 11% to £48m (2016: £54.4m). Are there signs of recovery? Well, if the MT basket of transport shares is anything to go by there has been a little bit of growth in the past month. But this doesn’t tell the full story for all of our big eight transport firms listed on the London Stock Exchange.
Last week, Dart Group revealed a near to 13% pre-tax profit rise for its transport operation, Fowler Welch. Off the back of this, which saw profit climb from £3.9m to £4.4m for the year ended 31 March 2013 at Fowler Welch, its group share price has continued to move northwards, today leaping to £2.40, up from £2.14 last week.
Fakenham, Norfolk haulier Jack Richards & Son has reported a 56% rise in pre-tax profit, and £2.3m rise in turnover, for the year ending 31 May 2012. The firm said the increase was down to a number of factors, including a slight hardening in rates, successful efforts to improve fuel consumption, a fortuitously-timed Christmas break and a number of new contracts that helped cut empty running.
