General Motors has extended its long-standing relationship with XPO Logistics with a three year renewal of its Vauxhall contract. The deal sees XPO make out-of-hours deliveries every night to more than 300 Vauxhall outlets across the UK. XPO collects cargo from the manufacturer’s national parts DC in Chalton, Bedfordshire before delivering them straight to retailers, meaning orders placed before 4pm are delivered by 8am the next morning. The future of Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port factory is jeopardised by high manufacturing costs and Brexit, according to owner PSA Group CEO Carlos Tavares.
Van production at Vauxhall’s Luton and Ellesmere Port plants totalled more than 58,000 units in 2012, making the company the UK’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer for the 11th year running. Total production at Luton for Vivaro vans was 53,465, with manufacturing at Ellesmere Port contributing 5,373 Astravans to the 58,838 total. Gefco has signed a seven-year contract with General Motors to manage inbound and outbound logistics for the US car maker across Europe. As part of the deal, which starts in 2013, Gefco will supply GM assembly sites in the UK, Poland, Spain, Germany and Russia from European suppliers and worldwide export ports.
