The HGV Road User Levy has smashed its initial £20m revenue target in its first year of operation, generating £44m in revenue from foreign-registered hauliers and prompting calls for the money to be reinvested in UK road freight.
The FTA has called on Eurotunnel and the French authorities to upgrade any weak spots in their security fencing after more than 100 migrants broke into the tunnel operator’s French terminal earlier this month, causing hours of delays to passenger and freight services.
The FTA is urging local authorities to look beyond the “short-lived” benefits of clean air zones (CAZ) and divert funds into helping operators upgrade their fleets rather than penalising them.
