A team of TfL officers is to tackle congestion in traffic hot spots across London in an effort to keep the capital moving.
Vehicles illegally stopping and unloading will be targeted by the 40-strong team of road and transport enforcement officers, which will work in 10 areas that are particularly affected by congestion. The team’s powers include moving unlawfully stopped vehicles, issuing PCNs and clearing badly set-out roadworks.
TfL said the team, which is set to double in size by spring 2016, will work with businesses on retiming or consolidating deliveries.
The FTA said while it endorses the team as a concept, it plans to seek clarity regarding the extent of its powers.
Head of policy for London Natalie Chapman said: “We estimate congestion costs the industry about £1 a minute, so it’s important that as much as possible is done to tackle it.
"But we’ve got to be sure that it’s not trying to move on vehicles that it shouldn’t be.”
Vehicles carrying cash or hazardous goods, for example, have specific rules on stopping in transit, and Chapman said the association wants to ensure those directing the traffic are equipped to do so.
