FTA: smart motorways would ease congestion and boost freight journey reliability into Belfast city centre

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has welcomed a study commissioned by Northern Ireland roads authority, Transport NI, that outlines proposals for the M1 and M2 into Belfast becoming ‘smart motorways’. Freight operators would see the benefits from an economic, environmental and safety persepctive if smart motorways were introduced, which turn parts of the hard shoulder into carriageways during congested periods. Zero-emission refrigeration for CVs on display at Temperature Controlled Storage & Distribution Show

A zero-emission transport refrigeration system will be showcased at the Temperature Controlled Storage & Distribution show later this month. Clean cold technology firm Dearman is developing a range of zero-emission cold and power technologies that use liquid air engines. Commercially-viable exhaust heat recovery system for trucks under development

The University of Brighton and engineering company Libertine are developing a commercially-viable exhaust heat recovery system for HGVs. Part-funded by the government through Innovate UK, the heat recovery project uses a pair of Libertine’s linear free-piston expanders to convert waste exhaust heat into electrical power. HGVs must comply with London’s Safer Lorry Scheme from today or face fines

Large goods vehicles entering the capital from today must abide by the rules of Transport for London’s (TfL) Safer Lorry Scheme or face fines of up to £1,000. It will require all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes to be fitted with sideguards and close-proximity mirrors in a bid to improve the safety of cyclists and pedestrians on the capital’s busy roads..
