Training company Merlin Supply Chain Solutions is attempting to tackle the problem of the HGV driver shortage by launching a course aimed at helping transport and line managers retain their driving staff. West Bromwich-based Transervice Express Transport will upgrade to a larger depot by the end of the year, after taking on the customer base and some of the drivers of fellow The Pallet Network (TPN) member MWT.
Motor Transport has joined the RHA and the CILT in calling on chancellor George Osborne to set aside £100m to fund the urgent recruitment and training of up to 45,000 new HGV drivers in his Autumn Statement on 3 December.
The FTA and RHA are set to meet with the Treasury today to make the case for government funding for the training of HGV drivers.
