An inquiry into competition in the UK postal sector has been launched, after calls from Royal Mail to protect it from last mile delivery competition earlier this year. The government has rejected calls from two select committees for an urgent change in insolvency law, after the collapse of City Link last Christmas left sub-contractors and non-secured creditors £30m out of pocket.
Royal Mail is planning a nationwide roll out of its ‘Delivery to Neighbour’ service in late September, to bring its final mile service more in line with competitors. Currently the only major delivery company not offering the service, it is awaiting regulatory approval from Ofcom, which will allow Royal Mail to deliver large parcels and items that require a signature to neighbours when customers are out.
