Mary Creagh MP, Labour’s shadow secretary of state for transport, told the party’s conference in Manchester yesterday that a Labour government would focus on transport safety - with big ramifications for operators.
“We deserve to travel safely at all times but this government scrapped Labour’s road safety targets and increased the speed limit for heavy goods vehicles on single track roads - which will lead to more deaths,” she said.
Last month it was announced that the speed limit for trucks on single carriageways will increase from 40mph to 50mph - a move that was enthusiastically welcomed by operators of all sizes, industry bodies and vehicle manufacturers.
“We want to see more people commuting to work by bike, too,” Creagh would go on to say. “That’s why the next Labour government will ensure that all heavy goods vehicles are fitted with safety devices to protect pedestrians and cyclists.”
She concluded by saying that “only a Labour government” would make the “big change we need to deliver the infrastructure to support British jobs and growth".
