UPS has appointed David Abney as CEO. He replaces Scott Davis, who will retire later this year. Currently chief operating officer, Abney will take up his new position on 1 September. He started his career at UPS in 1974 as a part-time package loader and has since held numerous positions with the firm, including president of UPS international. Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union have made “significant progress” in avoiding stike action at the recently privatised business.
The offer period for the proposed merger of UPS and TNT Express has once again been extended. Following an exemption granted by The Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM), the period has been extended until one week after competition clearances have been obtained from regulators, the European Commission and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. UPS has opened two facilities within the Olympic Park allowing athletes, team officials and the international media the ability to send and receive packages throughout the Games.
