And so its go,go,go for the longer semi-trailer trial Mark-2, and for once it's fair play to the DfT for listening to feedback and incorporating it into this new and improved, trial (accept no substitutes).

The Hub will dodge the issue that hasn't been put to bed just yet - namely given the expense and the relatively limited extra capacity a 14.6m longer trailer provides fleet operators, why would you run one? - but the removal of the cap stating 900 of each variant was on offer only, makes good sense (even if current evidence suggests the market will opt to run the 15.65m variant, and ignore its shorter sibling).

Giving operators six months to provide evidence that they are serious about running a longer semi-trailer makes good sense too. The two to three month limit proposed in the summer's consultation was well intended no doubt, but woefully inadequate.

With just 550 longer semi-trailer on the road to date, the trial as was has been a flop. Ultimately giving operators an extra tool to boost efficiency - however niche - is to be welcomed.

Let's hope this is the revision needed to reignite the trial and ultimately make these trailers part of operators' everyday arsenal (rather than a ten-year trial!).
