Building work for DPD’s £100m East Midlands parcel hub is likely to begin in August, following the granting of planning approval.
The project, which will form part of the £175m investment in its hubs and depots revealed last year, will see a 330,000 ft² hub developed on the 33-acre site close to J1 on the M69 Hinckley, Leicestershire.
The carrier expects that the hub will be fully operational for 2015 and estimates that it will increase overnight sorting capacity by 65%, with the ability to process 70,000 parcels an hour.
Up to 1,000 permanent full-time jobs are expected to be created when the site is opened.
DPD CEO Dwain McDonald said he was “delighted” with Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council’s unanimous decision to allow the development to go ahead.
“This is another important step forward for the company and also for the region and our customers,” he said. “The new hub will look stunning. It will give us a state-of-the-art facility as well as the capacity we need to carry on providing a truly world class service for our customers.”
The carrier recently revealed that £3.7m is also being invested in opening new depots in Smethwick; Sheffield; Snetterton, Norfolk; and Billingham, Teesside.
