Steve Granite's Think Logistics initiative to get school children interested in a career in transport is holding a launch event on 9 May at Whittlebury Hall, near Towcester. The presentation has been successfully piloted at two sixth form colleges and Granite is now keen for other operators to make use of the material he and his group has prepared.
With 33,000 LGV drivers 61 or over, and 75,000 aged 51 to 60, half of those are expected to retire before the Driver CPC deadline of September 2014. So it is essential the industry starts bringing in young people to start renewing the ageing driver population.
Granite came up with a plan to develop a presentation pack that hauliers can take to local schools to give 15 and 16 year olds about to embark on their career an overview of the opportunities offered by the logistics sector. As he had already recruited two apprentices from his former school, All Saints in Kirkby, Merseyside, Granite developed a three hour presentation that was successfully tested at All Saints sixth form. A slightly modified version was then used by Matthew Kibble at his local sixth form college, Nelson and Colne College, which also proved a hit with students.
Granite is now looking to recruit more operators around the UK to use the Think Logistics presentation to reach 1,000 students in 2013 and so form a pipeline of new talent coming into the industry.
