FairFuelUK and its backers were joined by 100 MPs at the Houses of Parliament on Monday [4 March], where 40 MPs signed a letter calling upon the chancellor to cut fuel duty.
The letter, which appeared in The Times today, was signed by MPs including Robert Halfon, Conservative MP Caroline Nokes and Labour MP Hywel Francis.
Representatives from the haulage industry including the RHA, FTA, Association of Pallet Networks and Hertfordshire-based firm PW Gates Distribution joined FFUK in lobbying MPs to support a cut in fuel duty in the chancellor’s Budget statement this month.
FFUK founder Peter Carroll told Motortransport.co.uk: “It exceeded all of our expectations by a huge margin. It was an enormously positive event with 45 Conservative and 40 Labour MPs, along with Liberal Democrat MPs showing their support.”
Pallet-Track member PW Gates Distribution showed its support by driving a FFUK-liveried truck around Westminster, which MD Peter Gates felt was “money well spent”.
Gates said: “The continued rising fuel costs are the one thing that a business like ours has little control over, we can shop around for other products to try and stop the squeeze on our profitability but fuel costs are always lowering the margins.”
RHA head of policy Jack Semple said: “All of [the MPs] were very supportive and they are aware of the impact that fuel duty has on their constituents.”
