The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) has called upon the government to speed up the “long overdue” creation of a funding and strategy package for Britain’s roads.
CILT has urged the government to develop a plan that stretches further than the current five year strategy.
Following the publication last November of Alan Cook's independent review into the strategic road network, the government is due to publish findings of its study into alternative funding and ownership models for the roads network this autumn.
CILT welcomes welcomes the idea from the Cook review that the Highways Agency should be given output targets and states that the government needs to look at demand growth over the next 20-30 years to account for long lead times in designing road improvements and planning applications.
Agg said: “Ensuring the strategic road network is planned as part of an overall transport strategy is vital. So far there is no sign of this," said CILT chief executive Steve Agg.
"Businesses and households together spend £44bn a year on vehicle purchase and contribute £38bn in road user taxation to the Exchequer. The strategic road network is vital to the efficiency of transport and its contribution to economic growth," he added.
