Gefco has signed a seven-year contract with General Motors to manage inbound and outbound logistics for the US car maker across Europe.

As part of the deal, which starts in 2013, Gefco will supply GM  assembly sites in the UK, Poland, Spain, Germany and Russia from European suppliers and worldwide export ports. It will then ship vehicles across the world, distributing around 1.2 million Opel, Vauxhall and Chevrolet vehicles annually.

The logistics arm of PSA Peugeot Citroen, which is currently seeking a buyer, has worked as a 3PL partner with GM since 2005. The 4PL nature of the deal will see Gefco merge logistics flows and purchasing with PSA.

Luc Nadal, general manager of Gefco, says: “Our top priority today is to successfully integrate General Motors’ flows and keep our promises on costs and reliability. This agreement constitutes a real acknowledgment of our expertise and efficiency from one of the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers.”

Gefco will set up a dedicated GM team in the UK, establishing a presence at GM vehicle plants.

Antoine Redier, head of the General Motors programme, adds: “Gefco is mobilising all its teams to become a standard-setting 4PL player”.

At the beginning of this year Gefco won a contract with Chevrolet to manage its finished vehicle logistics deliveries to 33 dealerships throughout the UK and Northern Ireland.
