Profile: Patric Cunnane

Patric Cunnane, Group Legal Editor

I am group legal editor for Road Transport Media, writing and commissioning articles on a wide range of legal topics. Contributors include top-flight freelance journalists and expert transport lawyers, as well as members of the RTM team.

Commercial Motor takes the lion’s share of legal coverage, with a dedicated eight-page section every week. Transport law, employment law and health and safety are all part of the regular mix. I also write for Motor Transport and occasionally for Truck & Driver.

Like all journalists in the group, I contribute regularly to our website www.commercialmotor.com.

In the past few years I have developed a strong relationship with the European Parliament. I travel to Brussels regularly to meet MEPs and industry lobbying groups and report on debates.

Just think for a moment how many laws affecting the transport sector began life in the EU and you will know why it’s necessary to focus on Europe. Here’s just a few – Working Time Directive; drivers hours’ regulations; digital tachographs; Driver CPC; vehicle weights and dimensions; cabotage regulations.

I also have a remit to report on the Irish market and was editor of Commercial Motor Ireland, a monthly supplement, which ran from 1997-2003.

Outside work I take advantage of London’s eclectic cultural life – live music, theatre, museums; galleries, pubs – few cities offer more. There’s lots of free stuff too.

I have writing interests outside journalism. These include poetry and fiction and I run poetry performances in London and elsewhere.
