Container haulage specialist Pentalver Transport has opened its expanded container facility at DP World London Gateway deep sea port and logistics park on the River Thames.

The expanded site adds 40% additional capacity to Pentalver’s London Gateway operation, which includes loaded and empty container storage, reefer and dry container maintenance and repair, transport and cargo handling.

Pentalver, which was bought by American rail freight giant Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W), in May last year, began work on Phase 2 of the site development work just three months after being acquired by G&W.

Chris Lawrenson, G&W UK and Europe MD of terminal services said: “I am delighted to see this key expansion project at London Gateway come to fruition. This investment was one of the first made by G&W following the Pentalver acquisition in May last year, highlighting their commitment to growth in the UK container sector and ensuring that we continue to provide a competitive, first-class service to customers.

"We look forward to continuing to work closely with DP World in further enhancing the efficiency of operations at both London Gateway and Southampton.”

Pentalver Transport , which began trading from Southampton Port in 1980 with 16 trucks, currently operates a fleet of 151 tractor units.

The operator recently bought 26 new Mercedes-Benz Actros units, which it is operating out of the Port of Southampton (pictured).

The trucks are fitted with the manufacturer's full safety kit, including Active Break Assist, and Pentalver Transport chief operating officer Shaun Allen said the focus on the trucks' safety spec was the result of its acquisition by parent group Genessee & Wyoming.

He said: “We had high safety standards previously, but the new owner has raised the bar by another substantial notch. Safety is a cornerstone of the Genesee & Wyoming business and its culture now informs every decision we take at Pentalver.”
