XPO Logistics has won a multi-year contract with wine enthusiast app Vivino as it expands into online sales.

The Vivino app has more than 20 million users who use its peer review service to help them select bottles of wine.

Now the firm is expanding into online sales, forecasting volumes of 500,000 bottles per year.

XPO will manage the e-commerce supply chain from wine cellars to home delivery.

The operation will be run from its multi-customer warehouse in Trezzo sull'Adda, near Milan, which XPO said provides greater flexibility in terms of space and staffing to cope with seasonal fluctuations.

XPO will monitor the supply chain in real-time, from a product’s arrival at the warehouse to delivery to the consumer – a process averaging two days.

To manage the e-fulfillment process, XPO warehouse teams will prepare each shipment using packaging materials designed to ensure the safe transport of bottles of wine.

An XPO-designed customer service system will link directly to Vivino’s website, staffed with trained associates who respond to customer requests for assistance.

Ube Gaspari, XPO Logistics MD supply chain for Italy, said: "We are delighted to support Vivino in its expansion into online sales by giving them the benefit of our e-commerce expertise.”
