United Biscuits longer semi trailer

United Biscuits is on the hunt for subcontractors to carry its products, according to head of distribution Rob Wright.

Wright told Motortransport.co.uk the company looks for new subcontractors to join its team of approximately 70 small to medium-sized businesses every year. “What tends to happen with small to medium-sized family businesses is that they might have changes in their business, so occasionally a haulier will leave us because of volumes elsewhere,” he said.

“So every year we look to see if there’s anyone with a good fit for our type of work with the right equipment.” This includes trailers with an internal height of 2.8m. “This isn’t standard,” said Wright, “but all of our loads are double-stacked pallets, and increasingly people are running trailers to this internal height.”

He added that while United Biscuits was not looking for load consolidation, it was interested in hauliers that might have an empty trailer leaving the Midlands.

“If we’re moving loads to the South West, we’ll try and find hauliers there that are moving loads to the Midlands so we can run as efficiently as possibly while finding operators that have volume running in the opposite direction, because we know they can offer an efficient load.”
