Temperature controlled operator Culina has bought 83 refrigeration units from Carrier Transicold as part of an ongoing fleet expansion.

The Vector 1550 trailer units will be mounted onto Montracon and Gray and Adams trailers and used to carry products from food manufacturers to distribution outlets, regional distribution centres and retailers.

The majority of the new units will be fitted to standard 13.6m trailers. Ten, however, will be put on 14.6m longer semi-trailers, which will form a part of the government’s ongoing semi trailer trial.

Culina chose to run the longer refrigerated vehicles to increase capacity and efficiency on set routes. The trailers will be on the roads around the clock, with operations only ceasing for a few hours on Christmas Day.

Mark Matkin, group fleet manager at Culina, said: “Our fleet is on the road 365 days a year, so we’re focused on eliminating unexpected fleet downtime altogether.

“In the rare event that we do have a problem with one of our units, it’s paramount that we get it fixed and back on the road as soon as possible.”

Matkin added: “The support offered by Carrier’s service partner network was one of the main reasons we chose Carrier Transicold. Also key to securing this order was the proven performance of the Vector 1550 units.”

Last year, Culina won Motor Transport's Temperature Controlled Operator of the Year award.
