The administrator of City Link has revealed that around 20,000 parcels remain in its network.

It comes as administrator Ernst & Young announced an additional 230 redundancies on top of the 2,356 made last week.

The remaining 141 staff have been retained at its HQ in Coventry and across a number of other sites to assist with the winding down of the business and returning parcels to customers.

The remaining 20,000 parcels are to be sent back to its Coventry hub, where they will either be collected by customers or returned by an alternative, unnamed operator.

The administrator plans to close 51 depots by 15 January, with City Link’s depots in Bangor, Isle of Wight, Carlisle, Guildford, Scunthorpe, Aberdeen, Leeming, Gloucester and Lincoln the first to close today. Depots in Leeds, Leicester and Newmarket have already closed.

The remaining depots will close when parcels have been returned to the hub.

Hunter Kelly, joint administrator of City Link, said: “It is with regret that we announce further redundancies at City Link, which will take effect over the coming days as the company’s remaining UK depot operations close. Having returned a large volume of parcels to City Link’s customers and recipients over recent days, it is no longer viable to continue operating these depots and a phased plan to close them has begun.”

Motortransport.co.uk yesterday revealed that City Link leased the majority of its vehicle fleet, with the administrators in the process of returning these to suppliers. DX Group has bought assets including cages, scanners and certain intellectual property from the administrators.

Operators including TNT UK, Miniclipper and APC Overnight are offering former City Link drivers the opportunity to join their ranks.
