7) Ian Stansfield, head of distribution, Asda

Since its takeover by US retail megalith Wal-Mart, Asda has been one of the most innovative supermarkets when it comes to logistics.

A relentless focus on keeping prices and costs low has seen Asda supplement its substantial inhouse distribution operation with a small number of key transport partners to drive out waste and inefficiency from every corner of its business. While still very much a superstore operation, the addition of 180 smaller convenience stores as well as an online shopping service and increasing 24 hour opening has tested the distribution division.

A key issue for primary distribution operators working for supermarket suppliers is the delays and possible fines they face for missing delivery slots at supermarket RDCs, and Asda has stated its desire to improve inbound delivery performance in 2015. A more flexible attitude towards the requirement to hit rigid delivery slots would go a long way to improving the efficiency of the whole inbound supply chain – will Asda take a lead?
