12) Richard Fleming, logistics director, Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s has more convenience stores (676) than supermarkets (595) today and it’s Fleming’s job to make sure that it’s 2,000 plus trucks and vans are delivering to this multiple channel of retail outlets as efficiently as possible.

Half of its convenience stores are subject to planning legislation, explaining why the supermarket has been at the cutting edge of out-of-hours deliveries, and is a founder member of Transport for London’s Re-Timing Deliveries Consortium.

It’s not just in this area that Sainsbury’s is changing its logistics operation; it doubled the size of its dual-fuel fleet in 2014,it launched its safer, urban vehicle in the summer, putting 16 vehicles on the fleet with enough safety features to add 10% to the overall cost of the vehicle. It will be Fleming’s job to lead from the front again in 2015.
