Recycling and waste company Veolia has begun fitting out its entire refuse management fleet with the TurnAlarm cyclist safety system from Vision Techniques. The system, being provided under a £1m contract, provides cyclists with audio and visual warnings along the nearside of trucks turning left. A low cost satnav-based cycle safety system for trucks navigating through central London endorsed by TfL has been launched by Navevo. Using exclusive data on LGV and cycle flows from Transport for London, ProNav HGV Cyclist Alert is standard on Navevo’s new ProNav PNN420 sat-nav, designed specifically for LGVs, and will be rolled out across the ProNav range.
Sir Peter Hendy, commissioner at TfL, opened the fourth meeting of the Construction Logistics and Cycle Safety (Clocs) initiative with an admission: “I did not expect this activity to grow as quickly as it has.” He added later in his keynote speech: “You all work on relatively thin margins but you’re bursting with ideas about how to make things safer.”
TfL has been criticised by the FTA for introducing a number of significant changes to the cyclist safety equipment requirements under its Fors accreditation scheme without a consultation or a formal announcement.
