Gregory Distribution MMD shipping

Gregory Distribution has signed a deal with Portsmouth-based MMD (Shipping Services) to take over its fresh produce distribution operation at Portsmouth International Port.

The new deal comes into effect at the beginning of September and will see Gregory take over responsibility for the distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables from the operator, which is owned by Portsmouth City Council.

MMD staff will transfer over to Gregory Distribution and its drivers will continue to work from the port alongside drivers from Gregory’s Chichester base.

MMD’s livery will remain on its trailers while the tractor units will carry the Gregory Distribution branding. MMD has an O-licence to run 22 vehicles and 44 trailers.

Gregory Distribution MD Andy Walker said: “This new arrangement between MMD and Gregory combines the specialist import services and facilities of MMD with the distribution and logistics resources of the Gregory Distribution Group to provide a one-stop solution for importers and fresh produce traders of both companies.”

Martin Putman, MD at Portsmouth International Port, said: “It means MMD clients at Portsmouth International Port will now be able to take advantage of a wider distribution network, giving them an even deeper reach to all markets throughout the UK. The increased vehicle fleet will also allow MMD to take on new contracts with confidence that the enlarged transport operation will deliver the goods.”

Gregory Distribution now operates from 17 sites across the UK and in July acquired Devon-based M&D Transport.
