A nationwide strike ballot is to be held at UPS depots nationwide according to union Unite, after talks to resolve workers’ claims of unreasonable workloads proved unsuccessful. UPS is set to acquire TNT Express NV in a deal that will create a €45bn (£37.4bn) global logistics firm. The deal values the Dutch firm at approximately €5.16bn, following its increased offer of €9.50 per ordinary share. UPS says that in acquiring TNT it will fulfill its long-standing aim to expand its European operations. Union Unite has warned further industrial action could be on the cards by drivers and warehouse staff at white goods manufacturer Indesit UK, if a ballot on the company’s latest pay offer leads to it being rejected.
The threat of a tanker driver strike could now be averted, as the Unite union and fuel distribution companies reach agreement over a new set of proposals. Unite has also been given an extended industrial action mandate of 21 May to allow it time to discuss the new proposals with its 1,200 tanker driver members.
