Yodel is trialling a new vetting system for staff supplied to it after a subcontractor was fined £4,000 for employing an illegal worker.
A Yodel spokesman told MT it had been working with the authorities on the investigation into the incident, which came to light after a raid by immigration officers at the firm’s Ellis Road site in Mitcham, Surrey, last year. “They were satisfied that Yodel carried out the necessary checks on the workforce at that time, but said we had been provided with counterfeit papers,” he said.
“We are trialling a robust vetting system, including similar technology to that used at passport control, to check documentation supplied to us. We have received Home Office training on the techniques used by illegal immigrants and how to identify them.”
