Discount supermarket Aldi wants to develop a 490,000ft² regional DC in Cardiff in response to new operational requirements.

The firm has applied to Cardiff City Council for permission to build the RDC at the Capital Business Park, which it hopes will serve between 110 and 130 supermarkets within the group.

The documents include proposals for a 322,000ft² ambient storage warehouse and 128,000ft² warehouse for chilled and frozen goods, along with refuelling facilities, a truck wash, parking for 70 HGVs and a maintenance bay.

It also hopes to develop 53 cross-docks for its ambient operation and 16 docks for temperature-controlled deliveries.

An Aldi spokesman said: “Aldi can confirm it has submitted a revised planning application for a distribution centre in Cardiff.

“This is an updated version of a previous application, in line with new operational needs including renewable and sustainable features.”

He was unable to comment on whether Aldi is likely to operate its own vehicles from the site or use a third party.

Aldi expects to create 400 jobs at the site.
