The Hub's recent visit to Palletline for the launch of Plus Logistics also provided an update on the pallet network's equally bold direct-trunking service.

Having gone live with its innovative direct trunking initiative earlier this year, Iain Brown, operations director at Palletline, confirmed that the roll-out was now complete with all 69 members now having access to the option.

Direct trunking operates in the style of a freight exchange or noticeboard via the network’s award-winning IT system, Contrado, and sees members bypass Palletline’s central hub in Birmingham moving pallets directly amongst themselves.

Palletline said direct trunking,  which requires a minimum load of five pallets, should help spread volume out more evenly, easing the load on the central and boosting members' operational efficiency.

Anything that can boost operators' margins will be welcome regardless, but it will be interesting to see if the direct trunking option takes off amongst the membership in the coming months and years.
