Asda Logistics Services has opened a liquefied natural gas (LNG) refuelling station at its chilled DC in Avonmouth, Bristol after taking an order for 50 dual-fuel Volvo FMs earlier this year.

The refuelling station has been supplied by compressed and liquefied gas supplier BOC and will be used to fuel some of Asda’s own-account fleet.

The supermarket chain opened the £55m Avonmouth DC in December and is licenced to run up to 150 vehicles from it.

Asda Logistics Services' national fleet manager Corinne Murphy said: “The transition from diesel to BOC’s dual-fuel technology has been extremely smooth.

“Alternative fuels are an important part of Asda’s green agenda and working with BOC and Volvo will help us deliver our 10% absolute carbon footprint reduction by 2015.”

In December Asda told Motortransport.co.uk that it would look to replace 200 vehicles by the end of this year. The dual-fuel trucks will be carefully assessed as part of the fleet replacement process.
