Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014

Logistics planning for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer will now have to be “done in a rush”, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has claimed.

The trade body has criticised the lack of information flowing to hauliers from the games' organisers and has issued a 50-day ultimatum asking for published details on routes, delivery restrictions and security measures, ahead of its 13 May logistics conference about the event.

Chris MacRae, FTA head of policy for Scotland, said it was vital for hauliers to be able to plan well ahead to avoid disruption to businesses and residents in Glasgow during the Games, which kick-off on 13 July.

However, he added that the Games Route Network was still just a map at this stage, with no finer detail included about deliveries.

The Freight Working Group only met for the first time on 11 March, which is way behind schedule when compared with the London 2012 preparation timeframe, MacRae added.

“The sooner FTA can get this information the sooner we can help our logistics members plan around the Games and the sooner they can help their customers – the  businesses and citizens of Glasgow – to plan around the Games to make then a success,”  MacRae said.
