17) Wolfgang Bernhard  - chairman, Commercial Vehicle Board of the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA)

A member of Daimler’s board of management, Bernhard’s task as head of ACEA is to represent truck makers in their negotiations with the European Commission over the next set of emissions standards for commercial vehicles.

Unless he can convince the rule makers in Brussels that heavy trucks must be treated very differently from cars and light vans, all the efficiency gains that the industry has made through investment in longer and heavier vehicles over the years could be lost.

Coming up with a formula that recognises the carbon emitted per tonne carried as well as the distance travelled will be difficult but essential if large, efficient vehicles are not to be taxed unfairly.
